Healthcare
One of our distinguishing characteristics is that we did not grow as a pension consulting firm and then attempt to fit our healthcare and operating assets clients into a pension mold. Over a third of Slocum’s assets under advisement are operating assets, ranging in size from small organizations to some of the largest organizations in the industry. We approach the challenges of these clients as unique, with issues distinct from those of pension or endowment clients.
With this in mind, Slocum created a Healthcare Consulting Team over eight years ago, in recognition of the unique asset structure of not-for-profit healthcare clients. Unlike other institutional investors, healthcare entities oversee many pools of assets, frequently with different time horizons, governance, oversight and accounting. We believed it was important to create a group of experts within our firm who understand these issues, work every day in this industry, and are qualified to function as resources for our healthcare clients.
We have worked extensively with the following types of healthcare assets: operating, self insured, risk retention groups, off-shore captive, foundation, debt reserves, various types of defined contribution, defined benefit, and cash balance employee benefit plans, and the securitization of accounts receivable. We understand that each pool of assets has a different liability structure, different needs, different staff and board oversight, and different audiences, and we adjust our approach appropriately.
